Lack of Environmental Regulations
Running a traditional gas-powered lawn mower for one hour releases as much smog-forming pollution as driving a 2016 Toyota Camry form New York City to Boston. Operating most leaf blowers for one hour is roughly equivalent to taking a drive from Miami to New York City.
Behind the Curve
Ride-on mowers used for golf courses, municipal parks and other are gassy spaces are further behind, with electric modes accounting for only 2% of the market. Traditional small engines such as the ones used in yard tools are currently on pace to generate more than twice as much pollution as cars by the year 2031, according to goverment statistics.
Spilled Fuel
Over 17 million gallons of gas are spilled each year refueling lawn and garden equipment, more oil than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez. EPA data has found that gas-powered lawn mowers make up 5% of the total air pollution in the United States.
Working towards a Solution
Replacing a fleet of 1000 conventional commercial lawn mowers with electric mower would be equivalent to removing more than 37 million cars from the road in terms of emissions.
